Women Safe City Project – For tackling the question of women safety

The position of women in India has improved quite a lot over the years. But it is still not enough. Many parts of the country are not safe for women even today. To take care of this problem of women safety, Women Safe City Project is being initiated.

Eight major cities including Delhi will soon witness on its streets a revolution. There are going to be all-women police teams and public panic buttons. The Home Ministry has approved nearly Rs. 3000 crores for the project.

Apart from the above two, transit dormitories for women and children will be constructed. Smart LED street lights, one-stop crisis centres, and forensic and cyber crime cells will also be implemented as part of the project.

The women safety promotion project will be implemented in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Lucknow. The complete implementation period is estimated to be from 2018-19 to 2020-21.

Recently, safe city proposals amounting to Rs. 2919.55 crores were approved under the Nirbhaya Fund. The Nirbhaya Fund was set up in 2013. It is a body for the implementation of initiatives that aim at enhancing women safety in the country of India.

Different amounts of money have been allocated for the different states. Rather than taking a generalised approach towards all the states, the government is looking into the requirements of the individual states. A mix of solutions is being adopted according to the state where they are being implemented.

A quick and effective response shall be guaranteed the well-equipped ‘Abhayam’ vans. The infrastructure shall include safe zone clusters in hot crime zones. There shall be CCTV cameras, smart LED streetlights and public panic buttons under the infrastructure.

This sort of integrated approach will surely help bolster the factor of women safety in the country. Now, women in these big cities will be able to walk the streets at night safely.
